Meter Unveils Supernova Core to Boost Cosmos SDK Scalability and Performance

Meter, a layer 1 blockchain pioneer in consensus and cross-chain infrastructure, has announced the availability and open source release of Supernova Core, a Cosmos SDK-compatible consensus framework. CometBFT will be replaced with Supernova Core, which solves scalability and performance issues to improve decentralization and performance for developers expanding the Cosmos ecosystem.

Freedom and Fairness are the cornerstones of Meter, a high-performance smart contract platform. Its native metastable coin, which is lightning fast, highly decentralized, and resistant to censorship and MEV, completes Satoshi’s vision of sound money that is not dependent on the fiat system.

Supernova Core expands blockchain development by using cryptographic approaches such as BLS and HotStuff, as well as sophisticated consensus algorithms. Supernova Core, which is completely compatible with the Cosmos SDK, provides developers looking to incorporate high-performance consensus solutions with a smooth transition without having to give up on well-known tools and frameworks. For more over four years, Supernova Core’s consensus engine has been running on the Meter mainnet, supporting a network of over 300 validators and managing daily peak transaction volumes of up to 8 million transactions. Its wide-ranging activities demonstrate its proven dependability, effectiveness, and fortitude—even under adverse circumstances.

Limited scalability is one of the many issues with current Cosmos SDK-based blockchains, since the consensus mechanisms are unable to sustain throughput as the number of validators increases. Ineffective network architectures and the overhead of validator consensus messages, which prevents scalability, are the sources of performance bottlenecks. Furthermore, options for cross-chain development are limited by challenges in integrating Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) capability.

Xiaohan Zhu, CoFounder of Meter stated:

“With Supernova Core, we are empowering the community to overcome the limitations of existing Cosmos SDK consensus mechanisms. By introducing innovations like BLS signature aggregation, more efficient network communication layer and the latest advancements in consensus protocols, Supernova Core enables developers to reach new heights of scalability and performance.”

In order to minimize communication overhead and facilitate scalability beyond 150 validators, Supernova Core tackles these problems via BLS signature aggregation. Through a layered network architecture, its optimized peer-to-peer (P2P) network design improves communication efficiency and dependability. The HotStuff protocol serves as the foundation for sophisticated consensus mechanisms that provide scalability, increased throughput, and quick transaction finality with linear communication overhead. Cosmos-based chains may easily include Ethereum-native tools and smart contracts because to the complete EVM compatibility option.

The architecture of Supernova Core separates state processing from transaction ordering, laying the groundwork for decentralized, high-performance L2 solutions. This innovation achieves the speed and performance of centralized alternatives while guaranteeing fairness and resilience to censorship. Supernova Core will soon be prepared for testnet deployment and is now open source for review. To further improve performance and developer experience, future updates will support parallel EVM execution and an optimized database designed for Ethereum-style key/value store access patterns.
